When you choose to host your event at the Meadows at Castleton, you become part of a rich history that spans nearly 200 years. Castleton is one of the oldest continuously operating farms in Rappahannock County. The original Manor House was built by J.F. Browning in the early 19th century. During the Civil War, it served as a hospital, caring for soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies and changing hands over twenty times.

Over a century later, the quiet farm was rediscovered by world-famous conductor Lorin Maazel. In 1988, the young maestro happened upon Castleton while lost driving through the Virginia foothills. Enchanted by the meadows, he returned with his wife, German actress Dietlinde Turban-Maazel. Together, they completed the restoration of Castleton Farms and acquired 550 surrounding acres in order to preserve the idyllic countryside.

In 1997, the Maazels established the Chateauville Foundation, turning Castleton into a renowned center for the arts and childhood education. The 145-person Theater House, once an abandoned chicken coop, now hosts world-class performing arts events featuring some of the most sought-after international musicians, singers, and actors.

As the artist's program grew, so did Castleton. To support new training seminars and opera festivals, the family created residences, performance halls, and spaces for artists to rest and play. 20 years later, the estate has emerged as a naturally perfect venue — a bucolic village of homes where friends and loved ones can gather and share in the magic of Castleton.
